"The whole bible was given to us by inspiration from God and is useful to teach us what is true and make us realize what is wrong in our lives; it straightens us out and helps us to do what is right."

January 9, 2009

Victorville California.  Once drowning in the despair of heroin addiction, the Rev. Jim Lewis now dedicates his life to helping others.  Some live as far away as Iraqi Kurdistan region.

Lewis has helped in the building of 12 homes in Passe Village, a rural community 50 miles outside of Duhok, the capital of Duhok Governorate in northern Iraq's Kurdish region.

"Who could have imagined an ex-drug addict right here in Victorville would be changing lives in Iraq?" said Lewis, the pastor of Praise Chapel Global Outreach Ministries.  The former addict who found salvation in 1978 is scheduled to return to the Duhok province in January to meet with six Iraqi pastors for leadership, discipleship and evangelism training.

The group he and his congregation works with, Mission Iraqi Relief, is sponsored by the nonprofit Hands of Hope Foundation International. Its aim is to foster goodwill and understanding between diverse peoples, particularly between Christians and Muslims.

Ex-heroin addiction, pastor Jim Lewis now dedicates his life to helping others in Iraqi Kurdistan. Lewis along with pastor Jack Harris are dedicated to building homes for displaced citizens in northern Iraq organization dedicated to building homes.  "The people over there were living in stone-cold shacks," Lewis said. "We wanted to help as soon as we heard what Jack (Harris) was doing."

In 2005, Harris met with Gov. Tamar Ramadhan of Duhok to discuss the possibility of building homes that were inexpensive, ecologically sound and equipped with modern technology. The base cost for a two-bedroom home with a kitchen, living area and toilet is about $4,000, Harris said.

"When I first went to Iraq to propose this idea, I didn't know if I would come out alive," Harris said. "But in two weeks I wound up being the guest of Nechirvan Barzani  prime minister of Kurdistan. The regional government said, These people (evangelical Christians) are good for our nation. We need them here."

Harris, with ministries based in Rancho Cucamonga, said he hopes to build at least five more homes in 2009 and eventually restore the whole village and surrounding areas.

Lewis said there is nothing more rewarding than knowing his church is helping to fill the needs of the Kurds.  His 150-member congregation has donated more than $25,000 to the cause.

Duhok, the third province within Iraq's Kurdistan region, lies 50 km south of the Iraqi Kurdistan-Turkish borders and 460 km north of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.
